Lev Ostrovsky is a world renowned physicist who has been actively working in the fields of the general theory of nonlinear wave processes, physical oceanography, acoustics, radiophysics, and nonlinear optics. He is one of the founders of the modern theory of nonlinear and parametric wave processes. He was the first to point to a possible existence of envelope solitons and envelope shock waves. Prof. Ostrovsky's pioneering research in the field of nonlinear acoustics stimulated development of novel methods of contact and remote diagnostics, new principles of sound amplification and generation . He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, which is clear recognition of his contribution to acoustics.
Also well known are L. Ostrovsky's results in the general theory of waves in liquids, in the problem of oceanic wave energy balance, wave propagation and interaction in the atmosphere and oceans. He made an important contribution to advancing the theory of hydrodynamic instability of stratified fluids and, in particular, to development of the concept of negative energy waves; he was one of creators of the perturbation theory for nonlinear waves and vortices. Professor Ostrovsky has created a scientific community known as “Ostrovsky's Scientific School ”, he supervised numerous university and PhD students; many of them became professors and well-known scientists widely recognized in the world.
The Workshop devoted to Lev Ostrovsky's jubilee is bringing together many outstanding physicists working in the fields of acoustics, hydrodynamics, and radiophysics, which is a confirmation of his great creative role in science and attraction as a brilliant personality.
